While there are numerous European products and services that deserve your attention, we thought that we should start the Buy European bulletin with free, open-source, privacy-compliant software that anyone can use. De-coupling from Big Tech starts here.

To this end, we present the Interministerial Free Software Catalog, collated by the French government and available in English here, with 526 free software to choose from for your needs.

Here are several highlights:

  • LibreOffice: an office suite akin to what Microsoft and Google provides, except it’s free, private, open to new ideas and based in Germany,
  • Thunderbird: a messaging application that’s easy to configure and customize, replacing Outlook effectively,
  • VLC: a video player made by French people for the world to use,
  • KeePass: a password manager in case you tend to forget them (who doesn’t?), supported by the European Commission,
  • Jitsi Meet, a free video conferencing solution, fully encrypted, that won’t collect your data or records.

And that’s only the beginning. Start a challenge and de-couple from one paid or non-privacy compliant software today! See you next week.
