Despite the rise of euroskeptic far-right parties, European citizens show more consideration for their Union than ever before. According to the Eurobarometer – Winter 2025 survey, 74% think that EU membership is beneficial for their country. A truly astonishing number, as it is the best result ever recorded since this question was first asked in 1983.
Among key findings, European citizens called for:
- More unity. 89% agree that EU Member States should be more united to face current global challenges
- More ambition. 76% agree that the EU needs more means (e.g. tools, budget, staff, etc.) to face current global challenges
- More democracy. 62% want to see the European Parliament become more prominent, recognizing its beneficial role.
- More hard power. 66% believe the EU should have a more important role to protect European citizens against global crises and security crises. Hard power has also been noted as the main area the EU should focus on to strengthen its position in the world, with 36% of the surveyed citizens calling for it.
- The protection of fundamental rights such as peace (45%), democracy (32%) and human rights (22%)
These positive results comfort us in our goal to understand and defend what Europe stands for, and the path we should take in these trouble times.
